Mike Pop has his personal recap of Governors Ball for this week’s MCU Indie Rock post!
Governors Ball 2013: Mud And Music Fest
This past weekend, Randall’s Island in New York was the destination for the third annual Governors Ball Music Festival. The event is the reigning king of festivals in the tri-state area, and despite Friday’s torrential downpours and the acres of mud that formed as a result, bands and music fans from across the country came out in the thousands to party hard. The weekend had its fair share of awesome headliners (Kings of Leon, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Kanye West, etc.), but let’s talk about the acts on the undercard. On the indie side of the festivities, bands like Wild Nothing, F***ed Up, Grizzly Bear, Cold War Kids, Bloc Party and more treated hoards of people to amazing sets. Travelling from one stage to another to catch full shows was not easy (and I can tell you from experience), but the park was stacked with plenty of rest stops along the way: delicious food trucks, thirst-quenching drink tents, merch stands, and other attractions. This blogger is still feeling the effects of sunburn and lack of sleep, but saying, “you just had to be there,” is an understatement. It had a subgenre of music for everyone, from melodic hardcore to witchhouse, from indie hip-hop to math rock. This weekend proved the Ball’s prowess, and it’s sure to stick around for many more summers. Until next time, indie-minded friends…
John Mayer’s google+ hangout was a hit yesterday where he announced he will be touring for the first time in three years. Mayer said,
“Lately I am inspired by writing music for the stage – that can go 15 minutes if you want it to, or five minutes.”
